My butterflies, moths and taxidermy:

BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS

None of the butterflies and moths used in my work are endangered and none have been illegally obtained.

My UK suppliers support Captive Breeding Programmes and Controlled Insect Farming Projects which encourage an active interest in conservation and stimulates an interest in world ecology. In turn, our interests helps animal populations in their native lands and assist indigenous people by providing an income and encourage the protection of dwindling forest areas.

Many of the butterflies are sourced from Papua New Guinea (PNG) - the world leader in conserving tropical butterflies. It is the only country whose constitution designates insects as one of its renewable natural resources. In 1978 the PNG government set up The Insect Farming & Trading Agency to develop this insect resource in a sustainable way. The aim is to allow villagers to ranch, and sell, about 100 specimens a year. Currently annual sales of insects to collectors, naturalists, scientists and artists worldwide is around $400,000.

These forests are rapidly declining and the case for saving tropical forests is now well known.  Many support this cause by buying "products of the rainforest," or helping conservation organisations working in these areas.

Local villagers collect butterflies and other insects from the forests to sell, or they plant caterpillar food plants and then sell the
adult butterflies that develop on the plants - a process known as "butterfly ranching". Awareness that the forest is the source of their income the villagers have a greater incentive to conserve the area.

BIRDS

None of the bird species I use are endangered and none are illegally taken from the wild. None require legal documentation.

DEFRA confirm that only endangered birds require certificates and official documentation and I do not use any such species. My glass domes:
